2023, wampum belts
‘i love you too’ uses wampum, physical embodiments of spoken words and pacts, as a medium to explore relationality, language, and responsibility. Traditionally, wampum are physical embodiments of spoken words and pacts, with beads arranged in specific patterns to encode knowledge so that the message is remembered throughout time. The two contemporary wampum belts use spectrograms of ‘i love you’, one spoken in Anishinaabemowin by their mother (top) and the other in French (bottom) by their father, as its pattern.These phrases are spoken in the mother tongue of each parent, which is not the mother tongue of the artist, whose first language is English. Combining all languages, the wampums present a treatise of love between the weaver and speaker.
